I know I bang on about the fact that in my narrow minded and rose-tinted view, there doesn’t seem to be much new blood being injected into the local scene these days. So when an artist such as Agnes Milewski announces a run of dates within our parish boundaries, it is only natural that I use this space to wax lyrical about it.
Vienna based Agnes Milewski is the perfect artist for the post genre world, happier to be hopping generic boundaries and subverting expectation than nailing her colours to any one stylistic mast. She wanders through the same plaintive piano soundscapes as Tori Amos and the more commercially friendly end of the Kate Bush heyday as easily as she delivers an alt-folk vibe or a haunted pop atmosphere.
You will find her at Gibson’s and The Beehive in Old Town on 8th and 9th February respectively and then at The Jovial Monk on 11th. There have been, visiting acts who have snuck into town and left an indelible mark on the local musical record before. People still talk about Or The Whale and The Vim Dicta in terms of some sort of quasi-religious, musical experience and if Agnes Milewski doesn’t join those mythical ranks of local gig lore, I will eat my hat and I pride myself in being on a strict millinery free diet and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
